On 12th November 2014, a team of three enthusiastic geographers from Year 12 were accompanied by Mrs McCandless to take part in the annual Geographical Association’s Worldwise Quiz at Queen’s
University in Belfast.
The team members were Paddy Graham, Thomas Dysart and Peter Forde. After arriving in Belfast and getting stocked up on our brain power in the form of a selection of fried chicken and chips from KFC (well known for its knowledge providing properties), we set off to the Geography building of Queen’s. On entering the lecture theatre, we realised we were in for a challenge, seeing the other eight teams, made up of Belfast schools, hard at work preparing any facts remotely linked to Geography. The quiz consisted of four preliminary rounds, and then a further four rounds for the top 3 teams. So after a Picture round, a Google Earth round, a Fieldwork round, and an OS map round, we went out for a break while the scorers counted up each team’s score. On returning, we found that we had just missed out on the next round; scoring 53 points out of 76, with the 3rd place school scoring 56 points. Mrs McCandless also missed out on winning the teacher’s round by just one point! However, we decided afterwards that the next four rounds of individual
questions may have been a bit much for our team, and were glad to have done as well as we did. And after all, when a certain team member (Paddy Graham) emerged from the lecture theatre onto the one way street and managed to get lost on the way to the car, we realised we were lucky to do as well as we did!
Thanks to Mrs McCandless for driving us up and down to Belfast, and for providing moral support for the team before and after the event.
