Dalriada’s 1st XV picked up their second major trophy in two years when they convincingly beat Rainey Endowed School at Ballymena Rugby Club in the Danske Bank Ulster Schools Bowl Final 31 points to 15. Captain Michael Finnerty led from the front scoring a hatrick of tries. Dalriada took the game by the scruff of the neck in the first ten minutes running in two excellent converted tries. From that point on Dalriada were able to control the game and despite Rainey rallying and scoring an excellent try Dalriada’s pressure defence forced another score when a mistake at the line out close to the Rainey line allowed Dalriada to go into half time 19 – 5 up.
Rainey started the better in the second half and a strong burst from the impressive Rainey 8 allowed Rainey to score a try in the left corner. With the conversion missed the score at 19-10 the game was interestingly posed. The Ballymoney boys were able to turn defence into attack anywhere on the pitch and the best try of the game came when Michael Finnerty broke from inside his own 22 and beating several defenders with pace and footwork scored just right of the posts.
With a substantial lead built up Dalriada were able to get more of their bench into the game and although Rainey were able to keep attacking Dalriada’s defence continually tackled forcing knock ons and turnovers. They did manage a score just before the final whistle leaving Dalriada Bowl winners for the 2014/15 season and giving the school another trophy for the cabinet.
