Year 10 Public Speaking Competition 2016
On Wednesday 22nd June 2016, five boys and five girls from Year 10 competed for the Jonathan Logue Public Speaking Cup. Each year, the standard is extremely high; however, this year it was exceptionally so, presenting the judges – two previous, and much missed, members of the English Department, Mrs Marion Hadden and Ms Hilary Timmons – with great difficulty in awarding the top three places.
A good range of topical and controversial topics were chosen from Space Exploration and Technology Today, to Social Media. We also had new topics chosen by Kelsey Glass, Sophie Scott and Katie Ferriby who all spoke to us about the difficulties facing females in a beauty obsessed, seemingly superficial 21st century society! We also enjoyed Auriel Guarino’s very clever satire on conspiracy theories.
The judges certainly worked hard during the course of the afternoon and finally arrived at their decisions after giving praise and imparting useful advice to all the speakers. The following places were then awarded:
1st – The Jonathan Logue Cup, £15 Robert Craig: 10S
2nd – £10 Kelsey Glass: 10R
3rd – £5 Paris-Rose McVicker: 10S
The runners up were also congratulated on their speeches and awarded a certificate for their efforts – they had, indeed, made the judges’ decision very difficult.
The English Department continue to be impressed by the talent and diligence displayed by the pupils of Dalriada – once again, we are very proud!
Many thanks to all the Year 10 pupils who prepared talks, and to the members of the English Department who supported this work. I am certainly looking forward to next year already!
