For a small(ish) country school, Dalriada has always punched above its weight with extraordinary achievements, both academic and extra-curricular. When I was a pupil, the rugby team surprised all, including TV sports journalists, by reaching the final of the Ulster Schools’ Cup. Even Paul ‘Gazza’ Gascoine appeared on teatime news, from a sun lounger in Italy, to wish them good luck. (He was playing for Lazio at the time.) Read More
Dalriada’s Christmas Concert has been described as the start of the Christmas season! The choirs and orchestra, as well as other groups and ensembles have been rehearsing for some time now and are almost ready to stage another superb evening of Christmas music.
Under the direction of Mrs Heather Montgomery, this is sure to be an evening not to be missed. The
exceptionally talented and renowned young musicians and singers will perform Christmas favourites and rousing carols.
Due to the very large numbers of pupils involved across every year group, and the popularity of the concert, it is taking place over two evenings, – Tuesday 16th December and Wednesday 17th December 2014. Tickets will be on sale from the school office from Wednesday 26th November and are priced £5. There will be light refreshments on the evening.
Whether it starts the Christmas season or not for you, there is no doubt it will add to it!
Dalriada pupils prepare to transport their audience to the world of the Opera Populaire with their portrayal of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s renowned musical, ‘The Phantom of the Opera’.
With rehearsals in progress, the cast and crew of over 250 pupils, under the direction of Mrs Kane and Mrs Montgomery, are working towards what should prove to be a thrilling four-night run of performances from Wednesday 3rd December to Saturday 6th December.
On a night when storms raged and temperatures tumbled, where more lovely to venture than Dalriada School for its annual Christmas Concert with its plethora of traditions and memories? This year saw one break with tradition, though; due to the huge popularity of the concert, the Music Department was persuaded to run it over two evenings, 17th and 18th December 2013. Nonetheless, the hall filled to capacity with family, friends and pupils past and present, so with garlands hung, tree in place and with the warm orange glow of the stage lighting, the scene was set for another memorable evening in the Dalriada calendar as Mrs Heather Montgomery and Mr Philip McGavock, lifted their batons.
Each school year can be measured in various academic, dramatic, musical and sporting events; each with their own particular place: each with a direct connection to the passage of time. Within the annual musical events the Evening of Music holds a significant and poignant place, being the final musical performance of the year and, thus, the final opportunity for the Upper Sixth choristers and musicians to perform on the stage at Dalriada. But what the evening also demonstrates is the depth and breadth of musical talent across all of the year groups: individual and group talent which never ceases to amaze and delight.
As the lights dimmed in the John Armstrong Hall; as the eager chatter subsided to be replaced by an expectant hush; as the sound of warm applause for, firstly, the leader of the orchestra, Hannah Tran, and then the conductor Mrs Heather Montgomery, echoed around the full-to-capacity hall, the audience already knew that, based on previous experience, they were in for a diverse and immersive musical experience: they were not disappointed!
Review of “Kaleidoscope” at the Riverside
One of the Collin’s English Dictionary’s definitions of “kaleidoscope” is “any complex pattern of frequently changing shapes and colours” – had the compilers been at Dalriada’s “Kaleidoscope” concerts at the Riverside Theatre on Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th February 2011, they might well have felt compelled to add “sounds” to this explanation. Audiences on both evenings were treated to an astounding, shifting pattern of visual and auditory delights, woven together by droll compere, Christy Gregg, with his posse of adoring fans and would-be dancers.
