All pupils at Dalriada study English Language for GCSE while many opt to study GCSE English Literature as well; the study of Literature enhances pupils’ understanding of the skills required for success in English.
GCSE English Language
There are three parts to the course:
- Speaking and Listening Controlled Assessment (20%)
- The Study of Spoken & Written language and Writing Creatively – Controlled Assessment (40%)
- Two Exam papers (40%)
Speaking & Listening – Controlled Assessment
Pupils are required to complete a mixture of Formal & Informal tasks – the best one in each of these three categories counts towards the final mark:
- Individual Presentation
- Discussion
- Role Play
Studying Spoken & Written language and Writing Creatively – Controlled Assessment
Pupils must complete three Controlled Assessments during the two year course:
- Task 1 The Study of Spoken Language (10%) (1 hour 30 mins)
- Task 2 The Study of Written Language (15%) (1 hour 30 mins)
- Task 3 Writing Creatively (15%) (2 hours)
Examinations
There are two written papers, each lasting for 1 hour 30 minutes:
- Paper 1 Personal Writing and Reading Multi-Modal Texts
- Paper 2 Functional Writing and Reading Non-Fiction
