On Saturday 24th March 2012, Dalriada’s Bar Mock Team competed in the UK Final of the Bar National Mock Trial Competition. The competition was held at The Old Bailey in London and involved the 16 regional winners from around the UK.
This is the second year that the team from Dalriada has won their regional heat and had the opportunity to represent Northern Ireland at the UK Finals of this prestigious competition.
Dalriada defeated several schools throughout the course of the day and secured their place in the Final. To compete in the Final on a National level was a first for Dalriada’s Mock Trial Team.
The team faced tough opposition from Queen Elizabeth Academy Trust School from Devon. Both schools relished the opportunity to compete before Lord Justice Hooper in Britain’s most famous courtroom.
Both teams put on an amazing performance in what was an incredibly close Final. Dalriada were runners up – losing out to Queen Elizabeth Academy by only 2 marks! To have been awarded 2nd place in the UK (out of 171 schools) is a huge achievement!
The opportunity to compete at The Old Bailey was, in itself, a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one the team members will never forget!
The Final was attended by several senior members of the legal profession. Two of the Barristers on the team were offered pupillages once the competition had drawn to a close. This is a week’s work-experience, in London, shadowing one of the country’s Senior Barristers. Pupillages in London are not easy to get, so we were delighted for the students to have been offered this opportunity.
